Aim of Workshop

Analyzing a wide variety of massive-scale complex data is the central and challenging issue in the data mining community since the Internet allows us to access such data in a fast and inexpensive manner. The purpose of DMSS2008 is to bring together researchers from statistical science and machine learning and have extensive discussions on diverse aspects of statistical data mining. We solicit papers addressing theoretical and methodological aspects of machine learning, statistical science, and their relevant fields, which contribute to understanding and development of data mining.

We have dealt with various disciplines of data mining in Japanese Society of Artificial Intelligence (JSAI) Special Interest Groups such as Knowledge-Based Systems (SIG-KBS) and Fundamental Problem of AI (SIG-FPAI). On the other hand, there are strong requests from data mining researches for more extensive and structured discussions on statistical science and machine learning. In response to such movement, we newly started the workshop on data mining and statistical mathematics (SIG-DMSM). This workshop deals with statistical and machine learning aspects of data mining, and aims at creating new data mining paradigms. DMSS is an annual international workshop within the framework of SIG-DMSM.
